Why I started Super 8 film video... - Scotland LGBTQ+ elopement photographer and Super 8 video

Some of you might be familiar with the beautifully nostalgic nature of Super 8 footage from your own family archives, or perhaps apps that replicate the vintage mood of this video format. In case you are not familiar with this, or don't know much about it... What is Super 8? It is a video shot on film. It was popular from the 1950s for home video - the first video format that was affordable and easy to use. With the rise of film photography, it is not surprising that Super 8 is more and more popular these days. As the actual film is small, the quality is not super high, but it creates a very atmospheric film, and as the camera is not stabilized it is often quite shaky footage, exactly why it has such a home family album vibe. It does not record sound(of course - using a separate mic makes it possible to record audio and have it as a voiceover).

I first saw this format in a movie during the nostalgic ' home video ' scene... And then completely fell in love with it - seeing it as part of exhibitions during my Photography degree,

and using the app version for holiday home videos.

Who is it for? - I believe it is for everyone who would prefer a nostalgic video over a cinematic one. It might be a stylistic choice - but it also could be a more affordable option. Cinematic style photographers are expensive for a reason - a lot of gear, practice, knowledge goes into what they are doing - and hours of editing. However, if you simply don't have the budget for that, Super 8 could be a great addition to have a beautiful video to look back on.
